Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Alumnet, a private network for verified members of educational institutions, on the web and in the mobile app. Alumnet is operated by Weld (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Alumnet, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.

1. Who can use Alumnet

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You may only claim an affiliation with an institution you genuinely belong to or belonged to, as a student, alumnus, faculty or staff member.
  • You may hold one account, and you are responsible for activity on it.
  • Organisations may instead apply to use Alumnet as a partner (a publisher or advertiser), as described in section 6. A partner account is separate from membership and cannot join an institution.

2. Your account and verification

  • You sign in with one-time codes sent to your email. Any email address you control works; keep access to it secure.
  • To prove your affiliation you may submit a document or, if you sign in with an address issued by your institution, that address. Each is reviewed by the institution's staff.
  • Institutions decide who may join them. Staff administrators may approve or reject your membership request and the documents you submit, and may change your verification level.
  • Documents you upload must be genuine and yours. Submitting forged, altered or someone else's documents is prohibited and will lead to your account being removed.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your identity or affiliation;
  • harass, threaten, or discriminate against other members;
  • post content that is illegal, or that infringes someone else's rights, including their privacy;
  • send spam or unsolicited promotions, or collect other members' information for such purposes;
  • share other members' private messages or personal information outside Alumnet without their consent;
  • access accounts, data or parts of Alumnet you are not authorized to access, or interfere with its operation or security.

4. Your content

You keep ownership of the content you post. You give us a limited license to store, display and transmit it only as needed to run Alumnet and show it to the people you shared it with. You are responsible for what you post and must have the right to share it.

5. Institutions and staff administrators

Staff administrators act on behalf of their institution. They must use administrator features only for their institution's legitimate purposes, treat members' documents and data confidentially, and follow the law that applies to their institution. We are not responsible for an institution's decisions about its own members.

6. Partners and sponsored posts

Partners are organisations we have approved to publish posts in members' home feeds. If you apply for or hold a partner account, these terms also apply to you:

  • We decide whether to approve an application, and we review every post before it is shown. We may decline or remove a post, or suspend a partner account, at any time and without giving a reason.
  • You must have the authority to act for the organisation you name, and that name must be accurate. It is shown to members on every post.
  • Posts from advertisers are always labelled Sponsored. You must not present a sponsored post as anything else.
  • Posts must be truthful and lawful, must not mislead members, and must not promote anything illegal. Links must lead where they appear to lead, and must not be used to collect members' personal data without their knowledge.
  • You may attach one photo or video to a post. You must own it or have the right to use it, including the consent of any identifiable person shown in it. We review it with the post and may decline or remove it on the same terms.
  • A partner account gives no access to members' profiles, messages or groups, and you must not use Alumnet to try to identify, contact or track members.
  • Posts are shown to all members alike. We do not offer targeting, and we do not provide data about who saw or opened a post.

For members: partner and sponsored posts are the responsibility of the organisation named on them. A post's appearance on Alumnet is not our endorsement of that organisation, its products or its website.

7. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or remove accounts or content that break these terms or put members or Alumnet at risk. You can stop using Alumnet at any time and delete your account yourself, from the Account section of your profile.

Deleting your account is permanent and takes effect immediately. It removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy, and we keep no copy. By deleting your account you agree that we cannot restore it, and that you will not afterwards ask us for a copy of, or access to, any data from it, because we will no longer hold any. This does not limit any right the law gives you that cannot be waived.

8. Changes to Alumnet and these terms

Alumnet is under active development, and features may change or be discontinued. If we make material changes to these terms, we will update the effective date and tell members before the changes take effect. Continuing to use Alumnet after that means you accept the updated terms.

9. Disclaimers

Alumnet is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties about its availability or accuracy, or about the content, conduct or identity of other members. Verification reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of false identities. Use your judgment before sharing sensitive information.

10. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Alumnet. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Rwanda.
